Finally, i got sticky for my third essay uploaded to testbig.com. Here it is.

Climate change is now an accepted threat to our planet, but there is not enough political action to control excessive consumerism and pollution.

Do you agree?

It is undeniable that climate change is one of the most hazardous global threat we face. The effects of such global phenomenon are no longer experienced only by environmentalist and scientists, but also being endured by general global citizen. The two main causes that related each other of this ongoing event are consumerism and pollution. While it is true that some actions have been taken, I would argue that we need much more actions to deal with those causes.

We live in era where the consumerism comes in higher rate more than ever before. Today’s people largely want to buy more goods and to travel privately with their own vehicles. As a result, many factories have built and many cars have manufactured to meet such demand. Industrial factories and motorized vehicles are two main contributors of global pollution that lead the earth to warmer temperature condition and, in turn, cause the climate change.

To cut down the amount of green house gases, various types of gas that contributes to global warming, large number of countries from all over the world had ratified Kyoto Convention in 1990s. Among the agreements was establishment of global framework to reduce an excessive carbon dioxide from industrial and transportation sector. This is one of the best international effort regarding climate change.

Unfortunately, on its implementation process, Kyoto Convention seems does not get an enough political support, especially in developing countries. Two reasons are mainly underlying such lack of support. Firstly, pro-green parties are not as strong as pro-market parties. Having bigger financial support, pro-market parties tend to continue their domination in policy making in developing countries. Secondly, the awareness and willingness from developing countries to allocate their resources to climate change issue are still in low level. Economic growth issues attract much more developing countries’ attention than environmental problems.

In conclusion, it seems to me there is still much to be done to counteract excessive consumerism and pollution. More political support and action are needed in order to make our planet more pleasant and sustained place to live.
